Brickner was born June 3, 1939, and grew up in
northern New Jersey. After
high school he served in the US Army in Germany with
an artillery unit. In his youth and while serving his
country, he was very active in sports. He was a big
fan of high school basketball and football. He was
even a bigger fan of the New York Giants football
team. Additionally he was an active boys and girls
basketball and softball coach in the Medford area.
Upon completion of his military service Marty enrolled
as a history major and later graduated from William
Paterson University. He married Alice and they had two
children, Brett and Dorene. For many years he worked
in the insurance industry retiring from the
Contributionship Insurance Company in Philadelphia.
Marty was proud to work for a firm founded by Ben
Franklin. He and Alice moved to Medford in 1977 and
soon became active in many of Lake Pine’s community
activities, including major roles in the Labor Day
parades and competing in tennis events. He served on
the Lake Pine board of governors and as the President
of the Lake Pine Colony Club in the early 1980s. In
his mid to senior years, keeping sports a major part
of his life style, Marty together with Alice, were
avid skiers and serious golfers. He started an annual
golf outing that continues to this day in his memory.
After
he retired in 2000, Marty founded the HOMERs (Handsome
Older Men Enjoying Retirement). The group gladly
adopted Marty’s three principles of paying life
forward through community service, sharing all
knowledge and expertise with others, and having fun.
Marty passed away August 1, 2013 after a long battle
with cancer. |
